Our residencies, educational & public programs bring together an international network of artists & cultural workers, supporting creative work as a tool to ignite critical dialogue, understanding & social impact.

CURRENT RESIDENTS
Espartaco Martínez is an actor and creator trained at La Casa del Teatro, with an international career spanning Japan, Europe, the Americas, and Korea. He explores dance, clown, and butoh as languages of resistance, with works including La Bestia, Inhumano, and The Heart Sutra. He has collaborated with Romeo Castellucci and Daisuke Yoshimoto, taught in Tokyo, and served as cultural advisor for Conafe. Author of Bitácora de Oriente and Dejarse ir, he also created the film Journey to the Land of the Tarahumaras.

Alexis Convento (she/they) is a queer, 2nd-generation Filipino-American artist based in Berlin, Germany. Working as Ulam, they create experiences that combine personal storytelling, edible installations, and performative scores, linking ancestral narratives with labor and care. Their projects include Kamayan feasts inspired by the Manila-Acapulco Trade Route, a cocktail experienced as tears, and one-on-one spoon-feeding interactions. Alexis is also Head of Production and Planning at LAS Art Foundation.

Matt Thomas is an architect, artist, and urban designer exploring the systems and patterns that structure daily life. He combines design, art, curation, and community engagement to examine the built environment, with a focus on food and water systems. Thomas is the Executive Director of The Paseo Project and founder of Studio Taos, an interdisciplinary research and design practice based in Taos, New Mexico. He earned a B.Arch from Kansas State University (2001) and an MSAUD from Columbia University (2008). He has taught at the American University of Beirut, Columbia University, Parsons School of Design, and Chongqing University.

Tania Mata began her dance training in Oaxaca 17 years ago, later expanding into Graham technique, contemporary dance, acrobatics, and aerial movement in DOCA - El Nido in Guadalajara. She has performed at Teatro Alcalá, Teatro Degollado, and Foro Larva, and since 2022 has taught contemporary dance, acroyoga, and movement labs at Necia.

Mario Cruz was born in San Jacinto Chilateca, Oaxaca. He studied Sociology at UAM Xochimilco and earned a Master’s in Social Anthropology from CIESAS. His photography has appeared in La Jornada del Campo, Ojarasca, and Oaxaca Media. Winner of the Best Portfolio Award at FOTOSEPTIEMBRE 2024, his work is part of the Contemporary Image Catalog of the Centro de la Imagen. He founded the Club de Experimentación Fotográfica and has exhibited in Mexico and Chile.

María Conchita Díaz, a Zapotec filmmaker from Oaxaca, studied Film Directing at the Centro de Capacitación Cinematográfica (CCC). Her 2024 thesis La Soledad won the BAFTA Student Award and the Yugo Student Choice Award, making her the first Mexican and Latin American recipient. She co-founded IXMATI Films, producing acclaimed features such as Gueixhuba and 8 Venado Garra de Jaguar, and is currently developing Ascio o Día sin Sombra.

Oscar Javier Martínez, also known as “Oxama,” is a music journalist, musician, and producer from Oaxaca. Active in radio since 1994 and in music since 2001 as a percussionist, arranger, and producer, he co-founded Cinema Domingo Orchestra with Steven Brown (Tuxedomoon), creating original scores for silent films. He has collaborated with Ana Díaz, Lila Downs, and Susana Harp, and currently leads Mori Trío and hosts El Sexto Continente, a jazz program with over 2,300 broadcasts.
