POCOAPOCO HOUSE INFO

Address: Ignacio Allende 415, corner of Crespo
**We do not suggest getting items sent to the house as they often don’t arrive unless tracked. Let us know if you need something shipped to Oaxaca.

the house
** DO NOT FLUSH TOILET PAPER (OR ANYTHING ELSE) DOWN THE TOILET. THROW IT IN THE GARBAGE! ALSO! PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH SINKS AND DRAINS -- THEY ARE ALSO SENSITIVE. THROW FOOD (and other items) IN THE GARBAGE INSTEAD. DOING OTHERWISE RESULTS IN MANY PLUMBER VISITS :)

Lock your doors and windows at night and when you are out for precaution. There has been no problem but we would like to keep it this way!
In general please do not use pieces of the house (plants, pots, pans, bricks, walls etc) in your work unless we have discussed it. Do not use the laundry machine, this is solely for Aurelia’s use to wash sheets, towels, and other home items. If you need something washed, please let her know on Wednesday mornings. (See below for personal laundry.)

Please use bath towels only for your body -- not for the floor! If you need a towel for the floor or to clean, please ask us.
The kitchen is open mornings during breakfast. Kitchen items, alcohol & food are not for general use but please feel free to ask if you need something.
The general roof area is open, but please be considerate of the resident staying in the roof apartment and refrain from spending time there in the early morning and late evening.
Please be courteous to other residents in the house and be aware of the time, 11 pm to 8 am is generally time for quiet.

water

Do not drink the tap water! There are large blue water containers in each apartment and extras in the back of the house. When they are near empty please put them back with the other containers, they will be traded out for new ones. If for some reason you are without water for a moment and very thirsty, there are bottles of water in most stores! You do not need to use filtered water to wash your dishes or your body, and most of us use tap water to brush our teeth.

food

The closest general market for fruit, vegetables etc is Mercado Sanchez Pascuas which is open every day until around 5 pm — it is about four blocks north and one block east of the house -- just north of Calle de Quetzalcoatl on Porfirio Diaz. Pitaya and Xiguela (slightly larger) are good options for organic and hard-to-find items. Chedraui is a supermarket with a few locations around the city. Other markets are listed on our OAXACA GUIDE (agregar link Jess)

***Most people prefer to soak vegetables that are not peelable in a disinfectant (no need to soak avocados, bananas, papaya etc) You can soak these in tap water along with a few drops of disinfectant. There should be a small bottle in each room.

other amenities

Pocoapoco covers drinking water and toilet paper. If you need more dish soap, olive oil, candles, salt, etc, that is already in your kitchen, they are available at local Piticos and corner stores (not organic) as well as Xiguela and La Pitaya (organic). If there are kitchen or home necessities that you do not have, please let us know, as occasionally things go missing.

noise

Oaxaca can be a very noisy city. Fireworks are very common, as are parades and trucks selling gas/water and dogs barking and occasionally roosters crowing. Sometimes this is annoying but it helps to think of it as part of its charm. There are fans in each room which can help with noise in the night.

showers

The water is solar-heated, when it is cloudy there tends to be less hot water. Because of this, there is sometimes more hot water in the evening. The top is hot and the bottom is cold EXCEPT in the studio, which is the opposite. Let it run for a while before you give up on a hot shower, and collect the water in a bucket to water the plants or flush the toilet.

garbage

Please separate the garbage. In every room, there is a small plastic bucket for your organic food. When the trash cans are full, take your trash out to the garbage cans located in the back of the courtyard. Please put garbage in bags tied tightly before putting it in the garbage.

cleaning

Apartments are thoroughly cleaned (and towels/ sheets washed) midway through your time here (the second Friday / Saturday)

laundry

For your personal items, there is a laundromat on Calle de M.Bravo at the corner of Calle de Tinoco y Palacios (Take a right out of the door and a right at the first corner. it is on the following corner) At the laundromat, the autoservice is one hour and 90 pesos, we suggest asking for this if you need things the same day. If not, overnight is a bit cheaper.

pharmacy

There is a pharmacy at the corner of Calle Matamoros and Calle de Tinoco y Palacios (Take a right out of the door, and a right at the first corner, it is two blocks down.)

drivers & taxis

Taxis are 60 pesos within the center, check prices beforehand for other locations.

For trips out of the center, there are many options for buses and colectivos, many of which leave from the baseball stadium.
The residency also works closely with Toño’s driving service, Wanderlust. He is wonderful and reliable. Toño himself speaks perfect English though not all of his drivers do. Driving service is 250 pesos / hour generally or 350 for an english speaking guide, 500 for an airport pick up, 250 for airport drop off. This is not a taxi service -- you must plan ahead with him!
Tono’s number is +52 1 951 309 6060, you can contact him through WhatsApp. Please mention you are staying at Pocoapoco.

doctor

Please let us know if you are having a health crisis. A doctor is available if needed, and the Reforma Hospital is recommended for emergencies.
